O2 Optix Contact Lens Recall
Dr. Langford January 19th, 2007
Wow, it seems like there are a lot of recalls lately dealing with contacts, solutions, and eye drops. The latest deals with O2 Optix contact lenses made by Ciba. By the way, this is a very good lens, but certain lots were not made to spec. If you have O2Optix, please check your boxes for the following lot numbers:
The affected O2OPTIX (lotrafilcon B) lenses were distributed between September, 2006 and December, 2006. The lots affected in this recall are all lots numbers starting with 6644001 to 6721262 with expiration dates starting from 2011/09 to 2011/11, and lot numbers 6626127, 6636101, 6637017, 6637019, 6637103, 6640120, 6640124, 6642109, 6642119, and 6643080, all with expiration dating of 2011/08…
To see if you have a defective lens, locate the lot number on the box or on the lens blister pack.
The green circle shows the location of the (unaffected) lot numbers on an O2 Optix box. The red marks show the location of the lot numbers on an affected lens blister pack. (These two lenses were the only ones affected in our trial lens kit.)
What happens if you wear the defective lenses? Ciba says:
A medical assessment, confirmed by external experts, determined that the probability of a serious adverse event associated with use of lenses with reduced ion permeability is remote. However, these lenses may cause persistent discomfort and/or foreign body irritation, and superficial corneal staining may be observed. The medical risk associated with these signs and symptoms is low to negligible, and upon removal of the lens, they typically resolve within 2-24 hours. No serious adverse events have been attributed to this issue anywhere in the world.
So if you are one of my patients with affected O2Optix lenses, then contact me or call Ciba customer service at 1-800-241-5999.
At Summit Vision Center, we’ve already confirmed that the lenses now in our trial kit are not affected. Since the announcement was made, our supplier has already pulled the affected lenses so they can’t be shipped to you from now on.

what would happen if you left these contacts in thinking it was your eyes and not the contact bothering you? could something more damaging occur?
Please refer the quote from Ciba in the above post, particularly where it says:
“The medical risk associated with these signs and symptoms is low to negligible…”
I personally haven’t had anyone call me about this.
